5 out of 5 stars Baby, It's Cold Outside!   February 18, 2008

I purchased the K&H Large Lectro Soft Outdoor Bed so my indoor dogs would have a warm place to snuggle when they are outside. It has worked wonderfully, and I am very happy with my purchase. Sometimes I will see four to five of the papillons curled up on it. It makes outside playtime much more comfortable for little paws.

5 out of 5 stars My cats love it!   January 15, 2010

First off, all my outdoor cats love this bed. As soon as I put it out, they were exploring it, and soon were happily stomping away on it. They've been inseparable from their bed since then! I've never seen my older cat happier; literally.

Now, the details. I didn't catch this in the product description, but the bed comes with a fleece cover. Awesome! I was expecting to cover the bed with some bath towels, but the included fleece cover is perfect.

The cord is protected with a metal spring so there's no worries about keeping the cord away from foot traffic areas.

The temperature control seems to keep the bed at a perfect temperature for kitties to sleep. I was concerned that the bed would be too warm, since it was designed for colder temperatures, but the built in thermostat works perfectly. I bought the optional K&H Lectro Kennel Temperature Control but I doubt that we'll actually need it.

The bed draws a miniscule amount of power. It's rated at 60 watts, effectively the same as a small light bulb; but suspect it pulls even less. I graph power consumption in the house, and can't even tell from the graphs when the bed's heating elements are on. (For comparison, my coffee machine makes a huge spike in the graph.)

In summary, I can't find a single problem with the bed. The cats love it, and it's going to be even more inexpensive to operate than I had expected. I'm going to recommend one of these for all my friends with outdoor cats!

If you're undecided about whether to buy one of these, take my advice and get it! Your cats will love you!

4 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!   December 23, 2008

Warm, durable, and comfy! Although I can't get it to "inflate" to my satisfaction, my dog often chooses this pad over his other more plush bed... even when it's not plugged in.

3 out of 5 stars This is a heated air matress   February 4, 2008

The bed is okay. First off, the bottom is always a lot more warm than the top, which seems rather silly to me. The bottom has the cord attached along with a plastic air valve. As it is an air matress, it makes a crinkly sound when my dog steps on it, which I find to be rather annoying, and some pets may find offsetting. The pad is thin and despite the "soft" in the title, it isn't. I ended up having to put a soft dog bed underneath the "bed" so that my great dane would use it.

In short: this isn't a bed, it's a heating pad that is insulated by a small amount of air so that it doesn't have to use as much power. If you're looking for something that your animal will find super comfortable, this probably isn't it.

3 out of 5 stars Outdoor Use Overstated   February 1, 2010

I purchased this dog bed for my 15 year old buddy who has arthritis because it is advertised as an indoor/outdoor heated bed that can be used on a porch. I wanted him to have something warm to lay on through our cold, snowy, and sometimes icy winters because he enjoys laying on the porch all day to watch everything going on in the neighborhood.

When the packaged arrived, I opened it and read the "warnings" paper that came with it. Unfortunately, the very first thing on it said that the bed cannot be used where rain or snow could get on it, and says it must be placed under shelter. Why in the world is this bed advertised as an outdoor bed if it must be under shelter!?!? This is false advertising! I planned on calling the company to complain and ask for a refund but got too caught up in my busy life to get around to it before the 30-day return period.

So, I kept the bed and put it on the porch but I'm going to have to keep a closer eye on the weather every day and bring the bed indoors whenever it calls for rain or snow. Oh well, not much else I can do about it, and I haven't found any similar heated dog beds out there that claim outdoor use so we'll just have to deal with this.

On the positive side of things, my dog seems pretty happy with it. He choses to lay on it about 30% of the time, but still lays on the cold concrete or ground about 70% of the time. It took several days for him to accept it and actually start to use it. I've also noticed that it works best with very little air in it because too much air makes it blow up like a balloon and he then doesn't want to step on it. It does heat to a very comfortable temperature very quickly, I tested it out myself a few times and believe it would be pretty cozy sleeping on it overnight without feeling overheated.

So, all-in-all, it's a great bed and works well. But, if you expect to leave this bed outdoors where rain or snow could get on it, it's probably not worth the trouble or money.
